Specialty Units & Divisions
Criminal Investigations The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for investigating major felony and misdemeanor crimes committed throughout the county. These include homicides, suicides, burglaries, narcotics violations, and sex crimes. Four members make up the investigations team: two general criminal investigators, one narcotics investigator, and one crime scene investigator. In addition to investigating criminal complaints, the investigations division also oversees documentation of all crime and arrest reports, submits assorted crime statistics to state and federal agencies, coordinates with other agencies in various multi-jurisdiction task forces, conducts all interstate criminal extraditions, processes evidence from crime scenes (fingerprints, DNA, trace evidence, firearms, etc.), submits selected evidence to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis, and maintains integrity of evidence for presentation in court.
The Patrol Division is without a doubt the most visible division in the department. It includes the marked police cruisers that patrol the roads throughout the county, responding to emergencies, and enforcing traffic laws. Twelve deputies are in the Patrol Division, including our Chief Deputy, one Captain, one Lieutenant, and nine deputies. Besides normal patrol duties, these officers respond to emergencies and other crimes in progress including vandalism reports, fights, traffic accidents, and domestic disturbances, provide traffic control for all funerals in the county (whenever possible), and help the public any way they can.
Court Security & Civil Process Division Court Security deputies serve as bailiffs in all courts in the county. They maintain order and security inside the courtrooms, supervise prisoners while they are in court, take individuals into custody when directed by the judge, and assist the judge. Civil Process deputies are responsible for serving civil papers on individuals and businesses throughout the county. The Sheriff's Office served 5,293 civil papers in 2006.

The Giles County Enhanced 911 (E-911) emergency dispatch center is the hub of all emergency communications throughout the county. From the initial request for assistance from the public to the final arrival of emergency personnel, the highly trained and certified dispatchers are on the job for you. One recent improvement in the call center is the implementation of a detailed mapping system. When a caller dials 911, computer screens instantly display a map of the caller's location as well as aerial photographs of the area. These help the dispatchers provide more accurate directions to the emergency. In addition to providing dispatch services for the Sheriff's Office, we dispatch for all five local police departments, eight fire departments, Giles Rescue Squad, Newport Rescue Squad, Carilion Ambulance Service, State Troopers and Game Wardens working in the county. |
