Activity Report

Border To Border 2007

This past Labor Day weekend, several members of the Sheriff's Office participated in "Border to Border", a multi-state traffic checkpoint project.  "Border to Border" is part of Virginia's "Smart, Safe and Sober" traffic safety campaingn.  US Route 460 in Glen Lyn at the West Virginia border was the site of this year's checkpoint, which was manned by officers from the Giles County Sheriff's Office, Glen Lyn Police Department, Virginia State Police, and Mercer County, WV Sheriff's Office.  VDOT also assisted with traffic control by providing signs and other traffic control devices.

Participating officers issued summonses for a variety of traffic infractions ranging from equipment violations to child safety seat violations.  Also among the violators identified during the checkpoint activity were several assorted commercial motor vehicle infractions, including one which resulted in the removal of one commercial motor vehicle that was unsafe to be operated on the highways.

Not only were traffic infractions identified during Border to Border.  Four criminal arrests were made, including one obstruction of justice and one for unlawful possession of Dilaudid (a schedule 2 narcotic).
Statewide, fourteen Border to Border checkpoints resulted in one reckless driving arrest, one DUI/DUID arrest, 112 other traffic infractions, 32 seatbelt violations (including 24 adult seatbelt and eight child restraint violations), and 25 commercial motor vehicle violations (three of which resulted in removal of unsafe vehicles).  Criminally, three fugitives were caught, nine charges for narcotics violations placed, and 23 other criminal infractions were cited.
